En estas conferencias pretendemos dar a nuestros estudiantes una visión diversa de la investigación en Ingeniería Informática. Por un lado, contaremos con la presencia de varios investigadores que expondrán los aspectos más relevantes de su campo.

Por otro lado, tendremos a conferenciantes que expondrán cómo han llevado la investigación que han realizado a la empresa, y cómo han desarrollado una spin-off a partir de la investigación desarrollada en la universidad.

También se celebrará un workshop en el que los alumnos del máster en Tecnologías de la Informática expondrán los trabajos de introducción a la investigación que han desarrollado.

Este curso CECLEC tiene 15 horas presenciales y 10 horas no presenciales, que serán dedicadas por parte del alumno para desarrollar un trabajo/informe.

Texto de la Oferta

La competición “Tu Tesis en Tres Minutos (T3M)” es una iniciativa de la “Red Temática Española para el avance y la transferencia de la inteligencia computacional aplicada” (Red ÁTICA), con la que la Red pretende visibilizar la importancia y el impacto social de la I+D+i en inteligencia computacional en España. T3M se plantea con dos grandes objetivos:

1. Explicar a la sociedad el beneficio de la investigación en Inteligencia Computacional que están realizando en la actualidad los investigadores en formación en España.
2. Promover en los investigadores en formación habilidades de comunicación, concienciándoles de la importancia de divulgar y difundir adecuadamente su actividad en contextos no científicos.

T3M se dirige a cualquier investigador en formación o doctor reciente (2013) en cuya tesis se utilicen o describan modelos, metodologías, o aplicaciones de inteligencia computacional, y ésta tenga un papel relevante en la investigación. En T3M, los investigadores participantes deberán presentar en un tiempo máximo de tres minutos, y de forma accesible a una audiencia o especializada, los objetivos y resultados principales de su tesis, qué problema han identificado, cómo su investigación contribuye a resolverlo, cuál es la importancia y el impacto de la investigación,... haciendo énfasis en los aspectos que puedan resultar de interés para la sociedad en general. Como soporte audiovisual se permite la utilización de una única transparencia estática.

T3M es la primera competición con este formato que se realiza en el ámbito de todas las universidades y centros de investigación españoles. Para participar en la primera fase de T3M unicamente es necesario registrarse en la plataforma de la Red ÁTICA y enviar un vídeo con la intervención, siguiendo las bases de la competición. El plazo de envío de vídeos se extiende desde el 15 de mayo hasta el 10 de septiembre de 2013.

Los participantes seleccionados pasarán a una segunda fase presencial, donde deberán realizar la presentación ante un jurado, en un acto público que tendrá lugar en Madrid a finales de noviembre.

Te invitamos enviar un artículo con una extensión máxima de cuatro páginas a dos columnas, siguiendo el formato ICPR/IAPR. El artículo deberá ir redactado preferiblemente en inglés, aunque también se aceptan trabajos en castellano. La fecha tope de envío es el 3 de junio de 2013.

La Comisión Europea ha abierto la convocatoria para 2013 del programa LIFE + con un presupuesto de 278 millones de Euros de los que un 10% corresponderían a proyectos españoles.

LIFE + tiene por objetivo la financiación de proyectos medioambientales en tres ámbitos:

• Naturaleza y biodiversidad LIFE+
• Política y gobernanza medioambientales LIFE+
• Información y Comunicación LIFE+

El plazo de presentación de propuestas cierra el día 25 de junio de 2013.

Applications are invited for PhD student positions in Runtime Systems at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS). We are offering PhD student positions for a period of 4 years (with possibility of extension) in the context of the ERC-funded project Riding on Moore's Law (RoMoL).

RoMoL is a 5-year project funded by the European Union that will start in April 2013 and that involves around 15 researchers. The main objective is to design new parallel architectures built using a higher level of abstraction. Instead of expressing algorithms as a sequence of instructions, we will group instructions into higher-level tasks that will be automatically managed by the architecture. We envision a holistic approach where the parallel architecture is partially implemented as a software runtime management layer, and the reminder in hardware. The hardware gains the freedom to deliver performance at the expense of additional complexity, as long as it provides the required support primitives for the runtime software to hide complexity from the programmer. The programming model will be OmpSs, which is being intensively developed at BSC, and is built on top of our Mercurium compiler and Nanos++ runtime system (http://pm.bsc.es/). The student will extend the OmpSs model and runtime with low power and resiliency features.

This project involves research in microarchitecture, runtime systems, compilers and programming languages. Prof. Mateo Valero is the principal investigator (PI) of the project. For a complete list of publications of the PI, please visit: www.bsc.es/cv-mateo.

El día 12 de Marzo, en un acto que tuvo lugar en rectorado, el doctor Sergio Cuenca Asensi ha sido nombrado Director del Instituto Universitario de Investigación Informática, por Sr. Manuel Palomar Sanz, Magnifico Rector de la Universidad de Alicante.

We have two postdoctoral positions available in the PAMELA project; a large and exciting new EPSRC programme grant. The project will run for five years allowing for an ambitious research agenda.

The post-holders will join the Advanced Processor Technologies (APT http://apt.cs.manchester.ac.uk) group within the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester. The group has made notable contributions to the development low-power processors, interconnect technologies, virtualization and binary translation, and massively parallel neural network architectures. The post-holders will be expected to work within a team undertaking software/hardware co-design of future low-power heterogeneous many-core systems. The PAMELA project is vertically integrated by having computer vision as a key driver application.

The post holders will join a project headed by Dr Mikel Lujan and Prof. Steve Furber. The APT group is a vibrant community of interdisciplinary researchers working on future many-core architectures and software with strong industrial links.

Scope

The International Conference on Similarity Search and Applications (SISAP) is an annual forum for researchers and application developers in the area of similarity data management. It aims at the technological problems shared by numerous application domains, such as data mining, information retrieval, computer vision, pattern recognition, computational biology, geography, biometrics, machine learning, and many others that need similarity searching as a necessary supporting service.

The SISAP initiative (www.sisap.org) aims to become a forum to exchange real-world, challenging and innovative examples of applications, new indexing techniques, common test-beds and benchmarks, source code and up-to-date literature through its web page, serving the similarity search community. Traditionally, SISAP puts emphasis on the distance-based searching, but in general the conference concerns both the effectiveness and efficiency aspects of any similarity search problem.

The series started in 2008 as a workshop and has developed over the years into an international conference with Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) proceedings. As in previous editions, a small selection of the best papers presented at the conference will be recommended for inclusion in a special issue of Information Systems. In October 2013, SISAP will take place in A Coruna, Spain.

Submission guidelines

Papers submitted to SISAP 2013 must be written in English and formatted according to the LNCS guidelines. Full papers can be up to 12 pages, while short papers, case-studies/applications, and demos can be up to 6 pages (read below for types of contribution). By submitting a paper, its authors commit to have the paper presented at the conference by at least one of them if the paper is accepted.


Contributions

Authors are invited to submit previously unpublished papers on their research in the area of similarity search and applications. Papers should present original research contributions which bring out the importance of algorithms to applications. SISAP submissions can be of three kinds:

Research papers (full and short): SISAP accepts both full (12 pages) and short papers (6 pages). The full papers are expected to be descriptions of complete technical work, while the short papers will describe interesting, innovative ideas, which nevertheless require more work to mature - vision papers should also be submitted as short papers. All papers, regardless of size, will be given an entry in the conference proceedings.

Case-studies and applications: Submissions describe applications of existing similarity search technologies to interesting problems, including a description of the encountered challenges, how they were overcome, and the lessons learned. All papers on this track will be given an entry in the conference proceedings and a presentation slot, though the presentation slot duration may be shorter than for full research papers.

Demonstration papers: Submissions should provide the motivation for the demonstrated concepts, the information about the technology and the system to be demonstrated (including a system description, functionality and figures when applicable), and should state the significance of the contribution. Evaluation criteria for the demonstration proposals include: the novelty, the technical advances and challenges, and the overall practical attractiveness of the demonstrated system. Demonstration papers will also be given an entry in the conference proceedings - online demos are expected at the conference.

DESCRIPTION

The INIT/AERFAI Summer School on Machine Learning is organized by the Institute of New Imaging Technologies (INIT) of the University Jaume I of Castellón, and co-sponsored by the Spanish Association of Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis (AERFAI). The focus of this Summer School is to study the most relevant topics and methodologies in Machine Learning and discover new challenges and trends for this scientific area. This event is open to any researcher or PhD-student who is interested in learning or refreshing their knowledge about the most successful approaches in the fields of kernel-based methods, multiple classifier systems, streaming data, ROC analysis, performance evaluation of learning models, statistical analysis of experiments, on-line learning, semi-supervised learning, data complexity analysis, among others.

The Summer School is organized as a five-days intensive course to be held June 24-28 in Benicássim (Spain). Leading researchers in their respective areas of expertise shall present each tutorial, followed by a practice session with demos and/or specific software in order for participants to gain a better understanding of the theory. Non-formal poster sessions will also be organized for the participants to present their current research and interact with their scientific peers.

VENUE

AERFAI/INIT School 2013 will be held at Hotel Intur Bonaire in Benicássim. The hotel is located 150 meters from one of the best fine sandy beaches in Benicássim at the Mediterranean coast. It is 10 minutes from the city of Castellón and the train station, while the Valencia airport is 45 minutes by car.

SCOPE

The International Conference on Similarity Search and Applications (SISAP) is
an annual forum for researchers and application developers in the area of
similarity data management. It aims at the technological problems shared by
numerous application domains, such as data mining, information retrieval,
computer vision, pattern recognition, computational biology, geography,
biometrics, machine learning, and many others that need similarity searching
as a necessary supporting service.

The SISAP initiative www.sisap.org aims to become a forum to exchange
real-world, challenging and innovative examples of applications, new indexing
techniques, common test-beds and benchmarks, source code and up-to-date
literature through its web page, serving the similarity search community.
Traditionally, SISAP puts emphasis on the distance-based searching, but in
general the conference concerns both the effectiveness and efficiency aspects
of any similarity search problem.

The series started in 2008 as a workshop and has developed over the years
into an international conference with LNCS proceedings. As in previous editions,
a small selection of the best papers presented at the conference will be
recommended for publication in a major journal. In October 2013, SISAP will
take place in A Coruna, Spain.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Authors are invited to submit previously unpublished papers on their research
in the area of similarity search and applications. Papers should present
original research contributions which bring out the importance of algorithms to
applications. SISAP submissions can be of three kinds (full details will be
announced shortly):

- Research papers (long and short): SISAP accepts both full and short papers.
The full papers are expected to be descriptions of complete technical work,
while the short papers will describe interesting, innovative ideas, which
nevertheless require more work to mature - vision papers should also be
submitted as short papers. All papers, regardless of size, will be given an
entry in the conference proceedings.

- Case-studies and applications: Submissions describe applications of existing
similarity search technologies to interesting problems, including a
description of the encountered challenges, how they were overcome, and the
lessons learned. All papers on this track will be given an entry in the
conference proceedings and a presentation slot, though the presentation slot
duration may be shorter than for full research papers.

- Demonstration papers: Submissions should provide the motivation for the
demonstrated concepts, the information about the technology and the system to
be demonstrated (including a system description, functionality and figures
when applicable), and should state the significance of the contribution.
Evaluation criteria for the demonstration proposals include: the novelty, the
technical advances and challenges, and the overall practical attractiveness
of the demonstrated system. Demonstration papers will also be given an entry
in the conference proceedings - online demos are expected at the conference.
